What is Yoga?

To many people, yoga is simply a physical practice of moving the body in all different postures or “asanas”. While this is what many yogis practice, it is not the only part of yoga. Yoga is an eight-limbed path and yoga asana is just one of the eight limbs! The practice of yoga in all its forms is to bring yourself closer to understanding yourself, others, and all of existence. The word yoga translates to “union”, meaning that we are practicing coming into union with ourselves and everything else.

Yoga is a beautiful compliment to a mindfulness practice, or any other physical exercise practice. Not only does it increase strength and flexibility, but it releases excess energy, so it is easier to sit in meditation. Yoga is a perfect exercise for all people including children, teens, adults, and senior citizens!

Vinyasa Yoga:

Mindful Cora primarily teaches vinyasa or “flow” yoga classes to adults. In these classes, students link breaths to movement and pose to pose in flowing sequences. This style of yoga is very much inspired from Ashtanga Yoga, the series of yoga postures developed by K. Pattabhi Jois. Classes also contain yoga philosophy, pranayama (breathing exercises), and meditation. Generally, the classes are accessible to all levels of practitioners and provide modifications to meet each person where they are.

Public Yoga Classes:

Wednesdays: Flow 6:15-7:15pm @ Healthy U Fitness

Thursdays: Flow 6:30-7:30pm @ Honor Yoga Washington

Yoga for Kids/Teens:

Use it or lose it! This statement is so true when it comes to the body. When people are young, their bodies are much more able to gain strength and flexibility and sustain through adulthood. That’s why yoga is the perfect practice for children and teens. Yoga is also good for calming the mind, gaining self-confidence, and overall health and well-being. Children yoga includes fun games, activities, mindfulness practices, and yoga sequences. Teen yoga includes strength and flexibility practices, breathing techniques, and stress management tools. If you are interested in learning more about kid or teen yoga classes for your school, community, or private lessons, please contact Cora at mindfulcora@gmail.com.

Yoga for Seniors:

Chair yoga is an excellent way for seniors to maintain strength and flexibility while practicing at a slower and more mindful pace. The chair allows participants to be in a comfortable position, but it also acts as a prop to help get into different poses. Chair yoga classes also contain a mini-mindfulness lesson and practice.
